Description:
This Luger rig is a very cool and historical piece.  It is a WW1 1918 DWM Luger that was reworked by the Weimar Republic in 1920 and assigned to the State Police of Dresden, with a 1942 dated Nazi military holster with 2 WW2 original magazines, and the original Detroit Firearms License of the soldier who captured it and brought it back to the states after WW2.  This Luger has certainly a lot of history!  First it was used by a German soldier in World War 1, then it was reworked by the Weimar Republic of Germany and issued to the Saxon State Police of Dresden in 1920 (at which point the front grip strap was marked "S.P./D."), then it was carried and used during World War 2, and finally captured by a U.S. soldier named John F. Coulter and brought home to Detroit Michigan.  This double dated Luger is all correct and original for a 1920 rework with all serial numbered parts matching.  The sear safety which was added in 1920 for Police duty is still intact.  It retains 93 to 95% of the Weimar reblued finish, and it has an excellent bore.  The rifling still looks sharp and there is no pitting or erosion visible.  The original grips are in good shape overall.  They are free from cracks and show below average wear to the checkering.  The right grip panel has a repair where a small hole was plugged with a piece of another grip; it does not detract much from this Luger's attractive appearance.  All of the controls on this DWM Luger work 100% like the day it left the factory, the action is smooth and locks up tight and the trigger works perfectly.  Both of the magazines that come with this Luger are World War 2 aluminum bottom magazines with blued bodies and Eagle/63 Waffenamts.  They are not matching numbers to each other or the DWM.  The holster is a nice original "bmd 42" code German military holster.  Made in 1942, it is in good condition with excellent stitching.  The leather is still soft and supple and it is 100% intact.  The rear of the holster still has a nice large "P08" stamp visible, and the Waffenamt "WaA640" inspection stamp is still legible as well.  There was no Luger take-down/magazine tool in this rig but a repro has been included until the new owner can find an original replacement if he or she so chooses.  As mentioned earlier, also included with this Luger rig is the original 09/05/45 dated Detroit firearm license for the G.I. who brought this back.  This can be seen in the pictures provided with the listing.  It includes all his information and his fingerprint, and the description and serial number of this Luger.  The book History Writ in Steel was used to decipher the grip strap marking, and we will include a copy of the page where this particular marking is discussed.  If you have been looking for a Luger for your collection that has a lot of history and some provenance from the man who captured it, this would be a great choice.  It is quite remarkable how much history this DWM Luger has witnessed!
