Description:

LETTERED Antique WINCHESTER Model 1873 MUSKET

44 WCF Rifle in Military Musket Configuration

Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1873 Third Model Musket Length Rifle in .44 WCF, received in the warehouse January 5, 1891, in New Haven, Connecticut, per the accompanying Winchester Archive Letter. The letter also confirms the configuration and chambering. The Model 1873 is one of the most iconic of American rifles. Given the moniker “The Gun that Won the West”, the 1873 was there during the Indian Wars and Range Wars of the late 19th century. Cowboys, Natives, settlers, miners, law enforcement, express companies and hunters all found these rifles and carbines useful tools. These rifles made excellent companions to revolvers at the time as they were chambered for the same ammunition, meaning that the user only had to keep one type to feed both guns. The 1873 really was the quintessential Western rifle, competing favorably with all the muzzle-loading and surplus military carbines from the American Civil War.

The musket configuration was specifically geared for the military, however, the U.S. government never adopted the 1873. Instead, they favored the single shot Springfield Trapdoor with its powerful 45-70 cartridge over the quick, higher capacity lever gun in .44-40. Not as many muskets were produced compared to rifles, but the extra length 30-inch barrel gave the musket a 17-round capacity, a 2-round advantage over the standard rifle. This rifle also features military style sights and sling swivels.

The receiver tang is marked “MODEL 1873”. The barrel is marked “WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS NEW HAVEN CONN. USA/KINGS IMPROVEMENT PATENTED MARCH 29, 1866, OCTOBER 16, 1860”. Both the barrel and the cartridge lifter are marked “.44 CAL”.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with no original finish remaining. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is smooth and clean. The bore is very good with nice rifling and clean surfaces. The action is excellent. Here is a very nice 1873 for a fantastic price!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 30 inches.
