INDIAN WARS Antique SPRINGFIELD 1877 Trapdoor Rifle
Primary U.S. Small Arm of the Late 19th Century
Here we present an antique Springfield Model 1877 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1877 in Springfield, Massachusetts for the U.S. military. Total production of this model was about 25,500. The .45-70 GOVT Trapdoor rifle was the primary weapon in the U.S. military from the end of the Civil War to the end of the 19th Century, encompassing the Indian Wars and even the Spanish-American War in Cuba.
This example features a long range rear sight and fine front blade. The breech block is marked “U.S./Model/1873”. The lock features a federal eagle and “U.S. SPRINGFIELD”. Butt plate is marked “U.S.” Government inspector cartouche is faintly visible on the left side of the stock, opposite the lock. A “circle/P” mark is faintly visible behind the trigger guard. Eagle “V/P” proof marks are located on the left side of the barrel.
The overall condition is very good plus. The original finish is about 70%. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock shows handling, but remains solid. The bore is bright and sharp. The action is excellent. Here is a very nice example of the venerable 45-70 Trapdoor!
