Description:
This "5th Model" Burnside Carbine Model of 1864 is an absolute beauty!  This variation was manufactured between 1863 and 1865 by the Burnside Rifle Company with total production reaching approximately 43,000 carbines.  They are known to have been issued to a large number of cavalry units during the Civil War including the 1st Michigan, 3rd Indiana, the 5th 6th & 7th Ohio, 1st New Jersey, 3rd West Virginia, the 3rd 14th & 18th Pennsylvania, and the 2nd 12th 14th & 16th Illinois among others.  The Burnside carbine was found to be well-built, tough, and accurate.  In an era when there were many carbine designs being issued to the various Cavalry units on both sides of the conflict, the Burnside quickly earned a reputation with the men who carried it as a great weapon that could be counted on in the heat of battle.  The Burnside Carbine fired a .54 caliber bullet from a copper or wrapped foil cartridge with a flash hole at the rear for the percussion cap to ignite the charge.  To load it, the breech block rotates down and around by lowering the lever to allow access to a chamber in the block in which the cartridge was placed.  The breech block is then locked in-line with the barrel by raising the lever up, and the hammer cocked and percussion cap is placed on the nipple to complete the process.  This system was found to be strong and self cleaning to a large degree, which allowed the soldier to fire a great many times without having to clean the barrel during a fight.  This particular Burnside Carbine is in exceptional condition.  The original case colored receiver and hammer still shows a lot of nice colors and particularly bright colors in the protected areas.  The breech block and outer lever still show most of the bright high gloss factory blue finish.  The protected areas of the breech block that are blued which are visible with the block in the down position are exceptionally bright.  The original blue finish on the barrel still looks good as well.  The barrel bluing is nice and even from the receiver all the way to about the last 3 or 4 inches of the barrel where there are some areas of discoloration and evidence of light corrosion.  The bore in this Burnside is spectacular!  It is minty and bright with sharp lands and grooves in the rifling and no pitting or erosion whatsoever.  The original Walnut stock set is in excellent condition as well.  It shows some minor scratches and handling marks but nothing major.  The worst scratch is visible in the pictures on the right side of the buttstock near the buttplate.  Both the forearm and buttstock are completely free from cracks or repairs, and the original U.S. Military Inspector's cartouches are intact and legible.  Everything works on this Burnside 100% like the day it left the factory.  All of the action mechanisms work perfectly and this carbine locks up tight.  The hammer still has both the half and full cock positions, and the trigger breaks cleanly.  If the new owner so chooses they could fire this carbine with no reservations with the reusable brass cartridges being made today.  If you have been looking for a beautiful original Burnside Carbine to add to your collection here it is!
