Description:

STORIED WWII Japanese Type 99 Rifle & Bayonet C&R

Complete with Provenance & Full Chrysanthemum

Here we present a Japanese Type 99 Bolt Action Rifle & Bayonet, made circa 1945 at the Kokura Arsenal, just prior to World War II’s end. This rifle is an example of a last ditch rifle that appears to be unfired and captured at the arsenal or en route to the front line. It comes complete with bayonet, as well as two letters of provenance, one from the veteran’s widow, and the other from the next owner. Please see photos to read the full text of both of these. The veteran who brought this rifle back was a Machinist Mate aboard the U.S.S. Maryland under Admiral Halsey. Admiral Nimitz sent his aid with this rifle, and together with Admiral Halsey, he presented the rifle to Machinist Mate Joseph J. Zaolino.

The Type 99 Rifle was conceived as an upgrade in chambering from the Type 38 Rifle designed by Nambu. While the 38 utilized the 6.5x50mm cartridge, the 99 was made to handle the larger, more powerful 7.7x58mm. These rifles were simple and very effective. Nearer the end of the war, with the U.S. successfully restricting traffic to the island nation, raw materials and other resources became more and more scarce, leading the arsenals to simplify production and materials even further. These no-nonsense rifles are known to current collectors as “last ditch”.

This is an example of one of those “last ditch” rifles. Per the markings on the receiver, this rifle was made by the Kokura Arsenal, and it was number 88457 of the 25th series, a series which was not completed prior to the end of the war. The Japanese mum is still intact on the receiver, unlike the majority of which saw the defacing of the mum when surrendered.

The overall condition is fine. This gun shows every indication of capture before being received by a soldier and fired. As the second letter states, the original grease is still present inside the gun. Also as the second letter states, the only blemish on this gun is the varnish throughout the full length of the right side. He kept it because it represents just a little more history for the gun, and we leave it on for the same reason. Original finish is virtually complete. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is solid with few handling marks. The bore is sharp and shiny. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic World War II Japanese Type 99 straight out of the factory, into the arms of a sailor, with letters that extend the whole way. A rare opportunity to own a piece of history!
