Description:

Imperial British AFGHAN JEZAIL Flintlock Musket

With East India Company Marked Brown Bess Lock Dated 1806

Here we present an antique Afghan Jezail Flintlock Musket with a British Brown Bess Lock, made circa 1806-1840s. Such weapons were used against the British in the Anglo-Afghan Wars by extremely capable Afghan warriors. As an officer described from the First Anglo-Afghan War:

“Afghan snipers were expert marksmen and their juzzails fired roughened bullets, long iron nails or even pebbles over a range of some 250 metres. The Afghans could fling the large rifles across their shoulders as if they were feathers and spring nimbly from rock to rock.”

The lock is marked “GALTON” as well as having the distinctive heart marking of the Honorable East India Company. It is dated 1806. Samuel Galton is a known maker of Brown Bess muskets, even of some that went to the colonies to fight the American Rebels. He was a member of a very interesting group known as the Lunar Society. The distinct shape of the stock and the length of the barrel is for convenience of shooting and loading from the back of an animal. One could lower the butt all the way to the ground and have easy access to the muzzle for loading. The barrel is significantly engraved and 49-1/2-inches long. The rear 1/3 and the front 1/5 of the barrel is engraved, as well as is the trigger guard. The butt is carved with an ivory segment on the very back. The front sight is a small blade. The rear sight is a stylish notch.

This example is in very good condition. The metal has a gray patina. The markings and engraving are clear. The stock shows much use, and has a crack in front of the second barrel band. The bore is deeply rifled and untouched. The action is functional. Here is a beautiful and historical rifle, representing Britain’s influence in Afghanistan.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 49-1/2 inches in length.
