Description:

INDIAN WAR Antique SPRINGFLD 1879 Trapdoor CARBINE

Springfield Armory Model 1879 in .45-70 GOVT

Here we present an antique Springfield U.S. Model 1879 Trapdoor Carbine, made circa 1880 at Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. Only about 15,000 of these were made. Trapdoors were known for their simplicity, sturdiness, power and reliability in general, but the carbine added handiness, weighing significantly less and being much shorter. They were carried and used by the cavalry. They proved the weapons that would span the period of the Indian Wars.

This specimen is marked with the federal eagle next to “U.S./SPRINGFIELD” on the lock. The breech block is marked “U.S./MODEL/1873” as they used up old stock. The left side of the barrel is marked “V/P/Eagle head”. The top of the butt plate is marked “U.S.” The left side of the stock bears a sling ring. A single section of cleaning rod is located in the trap in the butt stock. The circle “P” is faintly visible behind the trigger guard tang. Soldier graffiti is carved into the stock. The left side bears the full name “WiLLiE BRAnTLEY”, as well as “WiLL M”. The left side is marked “ThomAs M.” It would make a fascinating research opportunity to find the cavalryman who originally used this rifle.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces bear significant blue finish turning dark gray with age. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is solid, though it shows significant wear from the period of use. The bore has visible rifling and the surfaces are lightly textured. The action is excellent. Here is a very interesting Trapdoor Carbine with a “been there, done that” aesthetic.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches.
