The Model 1877 was Colt’s first venture into double action revolvers. It was quite successful, selling 166,849 from 1877 through 1909, primarily in .38 and .41 calibers. Nonetheless, there was some hesitation to move away from the single action mechanism, which had so proven itself. Famous adopters of the Lightning were William “Billy the Kid” Bonney and John Wesley Hardin, two legendary names of the American West. The revolver features a 4-1/2 inch barrel and is equipped with an ejector. The left side of the barrel is marked “COLT D.A. 38”. The left side of the frame is marked “PAT.SEPT.19.1871/PAT.SEPT.15.1876/PAT.JAN.19.1875”. The top of the barrel is marked “COLT PT. F.A. MFG. CO/HARTFORD.CT.U.S.A.”. The overall condition is very good. The original blue finish is about 35%, quite strong on the barrel, ejector, and in the cylinder flutes. Markings are clear. The serial numbers match. The Colt trademark hard rubber grips show use but remain in great shape. The bore is shiny bright and sharply rifled. The action is excellent.
