Colt Bisley Frontier Six-Shooter .44-40 Revolver
Made in 1901 C&R
Here we present a Colt Bisley Model Frontier Revolver, made in 1901 in Hartford, Connecticut. It was a target-shooting adaptation of the Single Action Army which had been around for about 20 years by this time. With its more vertical grip and lower hammer spur many found it easier to shoot. It was named after the famous shooting range in England. Out of 357,859 total first generation SAAs produced, only about 45,000 were made in the Bisley configuration.
The left side of the frame, underneath the cylinder is marked “PAT. SEPT.19. 1871./ JULY 2.72.JAN.1875.” The left side of the barrel is marked “(BISLEY MODEL) COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER” The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A.MFG.CO/HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”
The overall condition is good. The steel surfaces largely bear a gray patina with a bit of case coloring visible on the frame. The markings are legible. Serial numbers match. The hard rubber grips are worn slick. The left panel has a repaired sliver off the back. Colt trademarks are still visible. The bore has strong rifling with a bit of light peppering near the breech end. The action is excellent.
