Here we present an antique Nickel Plated Smith & Wesson .38 Single Action Revolver, made circa 1883 in Springfield, Massachusetts. Utilizing the Rollin White Patent that gave them a virtual monopoly on the “modern” revolver, S&W introduced the Number 3 “American” Revolver in 1870. This brought the revolutionary concept of a top-break, auto-ejecting revolver that was quick to load and unload. This was a large frame, single action revolver in .44 caliber. This gave them the jump on Colt’s iconic Single Action Army by 3 years. Nevertheless, the SAA became the prolific success in the United States. This was due to several factors, but primarily the No. 3 American was adopted with changes by Czarist Russia, and the company spent the rest of the 1870s focusing on fulfilling lucrative military contracts for overseas buyers. This brings us to the S&W Single Action, also known as the Model 2. It was introduced in 1876, and was nicknamed the “Baby Russian”. It too had a top-break, auto-eject design, but was slighter of frame and chambered for 5 shots of .38 S&W, a very good centerfire, self-defense cartridge still in production today. In fact, it is the third oldest cartridge still being manufactured along with the other greats, .45 Colt and .44 Winchester. These were a smash-hit with the commercial market in the U.S., selling 160,653 from 1876 to 1911. For comparison’s sake, the SAA saw about 182,000 sold between 1873 and the end of 1898. We may now conceptualize Colt’s SAA as the prototypical Western revolver, but it wasn’t for lack of competition and competitive features. The overall condition is fine. It features a 5 inch barrel and a special lanyard loop feature on the bottom of the grip. The nickel finish is nearly perfect. The markings are very clear and legible. The hard rubber grips are in fine condition, like new. The bore is in good condition and the action is fine. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
