This is just outside Cincinnati. It has an uncut 36 inch barrel and is app. 36 cal. It is signed "B. Hayden" on the top barrel flat. Look very carefully at the photo. It looks like "73" but is actually a "B". The rifle at some point was repaired between the hammer and tang and has had a piece replaced around the nipple. The barrel is a nice smooth brown patina. I'm sure the rifle has had a coat of varnish sometime in the past as some of the inlays are coated and have yellowed as shown in the photos. Stock is still a very nice curly maple with a checkerd wrist with silver nail inlays. The cheekplate is engraved "DGH" which stands for Daniel Gideon Howell. This rifle was passed down thru the Howell family and was obtained directly from the last Howell's widow. This is a nice light and slender rifle with an interesting history. It is nicely decorated and I think a pretty rifle that has been taken care of over the years. Blemus Hayden is a known but obscure maker and few of his rifles are known. Shipping will probably run around $75 depending on where it goes. SOLD Antique: Yes |
