My interests are Winchester rifles in models 1892 and 1894 especially with shorter than standard barrels. I have also written four books on Newton rifles and have interest in all models of those rifles. newtonrifles Description: This is a Winchester 1873 rifle made in 1879. It has been altered to a 17" barreled rifle after it left the factory. The rifle is a transition 1st/2nd model with the 1st model intact dust cover and some 2nd model features. The museum letter states it was originally a octagon barrel rifle and was later changed to a round barrel rifle. It also lists a set trigger although it does not work. The caliber is 44-40. The bore is good with significant rifling remaining and some pitting. It has a set trigger although it is not operable. The rifle has had a leather repair to a cracked, dried out stock. The repair is sewed with a natural material possibly tendon or other connective tissue. It has numerous tacks imbedded in the stock and forearm. The forearm is cracked the full length on the bottom. The action works fine and I have purposely not cleaned the rifle exterior. When I bought the rifle it was told to me the rifle came from the Pine Ridge Reservation. I believe this rifle is a rifle with legitimate Native American provenance. This rifle was examined by Wendell Grangaard (you can Google him for an ID) and the pictures show a letter by him along with the findings he arrived at after examining the rifle. He states that the rifle was owned by a Sioux man by the name of White Cow Walking. I make no claims for or against Mr. Grangaards finding and only communicate those findings in this ad. I will ship this rifle via USPS in a wooden box. The info on the shipment is weight 18 lbs. and measurements 43"x10"x5" if you want to calculate the shipping costs. Buyer pays actual shipping costs.
