Description:
The Marlin Model 27-S  take-down pump action rifle was made from 1913 to 1932 and was an improved version of the Model 27 with a "safety button" added to the right side of the receiver.  It was offered in .25 Rimfire, .25-20, or .32-20 caliber in a 24" inch round or octagon barrel.  It also featured a 2/3rds length magazine tube that had a 7-round capacity, plain straight grip Walnut stock with a steel crescent buttplate, and open iron sights.  This .25-20 caliber example is serial number 14705 and was made in 1915 or 1916, the age being narrowed down based off of several markings and features with known starting and stopping points.  This Model 27-S has the factory drilled and tapped receiver top for the Marlin/Hepburn sight which Marlin only did until 1916.  The serial number is actually hidden on this rifle and only visible with the buttstock removed, it is stamped on the left edge of the tang, and the stock itself is stamped with a matching serial number in the inletted area for the tang.  This Marlin Model 27-S is really a neat and attractive gun, and is in great shape overall.  After examining both the interior and exterior of this rifle it is apparent that this rifle was not used very much at all, and the finish wear is a result of poor storage rather than use.  All of the edges are crisp and sharp, and all of the original screws are clean and show no signs of being turned.  The original gloss factory blue finish still looks really good overall, and would rate somewhere between 75 and 80%.  When this gun was last handled and put up many decades ago in a closet or somewhere like that it was probably a 95% gun, and as mentioned previously it was not oiled properly and developed a light coat of surface rust that we cleaned off of it.  The internals show very little wear whatsoever, and everything is still nice and tight.  The bore is good in this Marlin, while it shows some light pitting the rifling is very strong with nice lands and grooves.  The original factory Walnut stock set is still on this Model 27-S and has a great look it that matches the rifle.  The wood shows some small handling marks and some small dents and scratches consistent with the rest of the gun but nothing major.  There are 2 very small minor cracks on the wrist of the stock, one at the rear of the top tang, and one at the rear of the lower tang.  Both are less than a 1/2" inch in length and are closed tight and show no movement.  There is one small crack on the forearm as well, located on the bottom rear edge in the dented spot.  This can be seen in the pictures provided and is minor like the others, it does not open or move when pressure is applied to it.  None of these cracks should get any worse and could be left as-is, visible only under very close inspection.  The buttstock still has the factory original steel crescent buttplate in place, perfectly fit to the stock and tight to the wood with clean factory original screws.  The magazine tube and spring loaded follower are in great shape with plenty of spring pressure.  To load this rifle you push the release button on the end of the magazine follower and pull it up past the muzzle to expose the loading port just above the forearm.  There is a close up picture provided of this loading port opened up.  The action on this Model 27-S is smooth and tight, and it locks into battery without any slop.  Everything on this vintage Marlin works 100% like it was designed to.  The take down thumb screws are also in perfect working condition and the rifle takes down quickly and easily.  There were not too many of these Model 27-S's made and rarely are they available.  If you have been looking for a cool vintage rifle to add to your collection this Marlin would be a great choice.  It is a nice honest and clean original piece that could be enjoyed at the range but still be considered a great investment.
