Very special pair of Merkel sidelock O/U shotguns..410 & 28
The information from Merkel never shows that a .410 was offered in a 203 or any other sidelock! The story is that there was a consecutively numbered four gun set (12, 20, 28 & 410) ordered by Tom Ruger for his father Bill. At one time I had all four guns! Supposedly Tom Ruger toured Merkel and was allowed to order the four-gun set which eventually ended-up in Atlanta. The story was verbally confirmed but there is no paperwork to substantiate my assertion. Regardless I have the consecutively numbered 28 and the .410 as a Huey cased set.
The Merkel 203 sidelock .410 bore O/U shotgun circa 1992 has 25 5/8” (26”) solid ribbed barrels choke .025 & .030 (extremely super full and even tighter!) but marked 1/4 & 1/4. The stock has a 14 3/8” LOP, 1 5/8” DAC and 2 5/8” DAH. The gun weighs 6 lbs. 8 oz.
The Merkel 203 sidelock 28 gauge O/U shotgun circa 1992 has 25 5/8” (26”) solid ribbed barrels choke .035 & .050 (extremely super full and even tighter!) but marked VZ & 1/2. The stock has a 14 1/4” LOP, 1 1/2” DAC and 2 1/2” DAH. The gun weighs 6 lbs. 8 oz.
Both guns have Rose & Scroll engraving with hand detachable sidelocks. Both have single selective triggers and both are absolutely in “like new” condition. No boxes or paperwork, but as mentioned above they are cased as a pair in a Huey oak & leather case complete with canvas cover.
