UPDATE: Some further information has come my way that there was periodic limited production of the 1894's beginning in mid to late September of 1894 which runs contrary to the information I had used. From what  I can gather is there were some guns assembled in the one month time period prior to the October 20th date that I reference below, I guess this becomes a first month gun as opposed to a second day gun to be accurate. I will leave my original description unaltered for reference  I used the Winchester Model 94 a Century of Craftsmanship as my original source for dates in the original description.

True classic find in this 2nd day serial numbered and first week in the warehouse Winchester 1894 sporting rifle in 38-55. S/N 148 Scare first model configuration with the 9 o’clock screw. The gun was serial numbered 10/22/1894 and in the warehouse on 10/27/1894.  Original wood and good metal wit ha some light pitted areas on the left side as shown. Only change to the gun that I can see is a 2nd model hammer was installed somewhere in it ‘s life.  The 26” octagon barrel has sharp edges and retains a decent bore (for a black powder 38-55 (I’d rate it above average) All lettering is sharp and legible.  The wood is in good condition with strong finish but it does show normal use and wear. Early first week production 94’s are extremely rare and this one will look good in any collection.
