Description:
1922-Dated Italian BODEO 1889 OFFICER’S Revolver

Here we present an Italian Bodeo Model 1889 Model Officer’s Revolver, made by Castelli in 1922 in Brescia, Italy. The Bodeo Model 1889 was named after the head of Italian firearm commission, Sgt. Carlo Bodeo, after its adoption into service in 1891. It was produced in both Spain and Italy. The Bodeo was slated to be replaced when the Glisenti Model 1910 was adopted, Italy’s first semi-automatic to be adopted. However, the reliability of the Glisenti left much to be desired so that the Bodeo remained in production until 1925. Even when the much improved Beretta Model 1934 was adopted, the Bodeo stayed in service until the end of World War II. This revolver may have seen fighting during Italy’s conquest of Ethiopia (1935-36), the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), the invasion of Albania (1939), and World War II (1940-45).

There were two version of this revolver: one was issued to soldiers and it had an octagonal barrel, folding trigger and no trigger guard; the other was issued to field officers and NCOs and it had a shorter, round barrel and a traditional trigger and guard. The left side of this revolver’s frame is marked “N&V/CASTELLI/1922/BRESCIA”. The holster is included and is unmarked.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with age and retain about 35% of the original blue finish. The markings are clear and legible. The bore is clear with good rifling. The grips are in good shape. The action on this revolver is excellent. Here is a really neat Italian revolver that saw the rise and fall of the Fascists in the mid-20th Century!
