Description:

“Kansas” MARKED SPRINGFIELD 1877 Trapdoor Rifle

“PROPERTY OF STATE OF KANSAS”

Here we present an antique “Property of State of Kansas” Marked Springfield Model 1877 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1877 in Springfield, Massachusetts for the U.S. military. About 25,500 were produced. The .45-70 GOVT Trapdoor rifle was the primary weapon in the U.S. military from the end of the Civil War to the end of the 19th Century, encompassing the Indian Wars and even the Spanish-American War in Cuba. It was still being used when the Springfield 1903 was adopted.

This example is marked “PROPERTY OF STATE OF KANSAS/NOT TRANSFERABLE”. As noted by Major John Charles Davis in his thesis on U.S. Army Rifle & Carbine Adoption Between 1865 and 1900:

The .45-caliber Trapdoors firing black-powder cartridges continued to serve in the hands of volunteers well after their removal from active service. Volunteer units carried the Trapdoor alongside active units armed with the Krag during the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection. The Army did not completely remove the Trapdoor Springfield from service until after the turn of the 20th century when it replaced the Krag with the Model 1903 Springfield. The state of Kansas reported possessing 1,605 Springfield rifles on 30 June 1900, 1,374 of which remained in the hands of troops in the 1st and 2nd Kansas Regiments.

The breech block is marked “U.S./Model/1873”. The lock features a federal eagle and “U.S. SPRINGFIELD”. Butt plate is marked “U.S.” the top of the barrel is marked “PROPERTY OF STATE OF KANSAS/NON TRANSFERABLE”. Eagle “V/P” proof marks are located on the left side of the barrel.

The overall condition is very good. 30% of the original blue remains. The markings are clear and legible. The stock shows some old repairs around the lock. These repairs are stable. The bore is clear and bright with strong rifling. The action on this rifle is excellent. Here is a very neat & scarce example of a Trapdoor Springfield found in use as late as 1900!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 32-5/8 inches.

Caliber: .45-70 GOVT
