FRENCH Antique M1822 FLINTLOCK Musket by MUTZIG
Flintlock Musket from the Bourbon Restoration
Here we present an antique French Model 1822 Flintlock Musket, made in 1825 at the French arsenal at Mutzig. This is an early example that has survived the years without being converted to the percussion firing system. These are quite scarce. This musket was witness to the near constant regime change in 19th Century France as the Bourbons were carried out of power just as quickly as they came back to it.
This Model 1822 Flintlock Musket is mounted in attractive brass hardware. The top of the barrel tang is marked “Mle. 1822”. The lock is marked “Mre. Rle. de MUTZIG”. The stock has two sets of initials marked on them: “CR” and B.V.C.”, the latter appearing twice. Royal armory proof and acceptance marks throughout.
The overall condition is near fine. The steel is finished bright under a coat of old oil. The markings are clear and legible. The stock shows typical period handling marks and remains solid. The smooth bore is clear and bright. The action on this musket is excellent, crisp and strong. Here is a very nice example of a scarce French musket in its original configuration!
