ELWELL Lock 1840s Hunting Rifle with Brass Patch Box Here we present an antique Half-Stock Long Rifle, made circa 1840 very possibly in Ohio. This rifle would have been produced by a gun maker, likely in quite primitive conditions. It was meant to be a hunting implement and do double duty as a protector of the homestead. This one is relatively light and handy with a handsome patch box on the right side of the stock. Patch box, trigger guard, butt plate, and ramrod tube are of brass. The lock is marked “H. ELWELL/WARRANTED”. Henry Elwell was a lock maker in the early 19th century from Seneca County, Ohio. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are legible. The stock has had some of the damage around the lock repaired. The bore is thick with dust. The action is not functional though it is mobile. Here is a good-looking rifle to show above the mantle. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 34-3/8 inches. Caliber: .45 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
