Henry Peabody developed this sturdy, single-shot, breechloading rifle during the American Civil War and it compared very favorably against the competition. It might have been adopted by the US military had the conflict not ended when it did. Instead, the federal government decided to adopt the Allin Trapdoor Conversion of the ubiquitous Model 1861 Muskets that were in surplus after the war. Several states, such as Massachusetts and Connecticut, purchased these rifles for their militias. This rifle is a marked example of the Connecticut Militia’s. It was originally purchased chambered in the .43 Spanish cartridge but was sent back to the factory in about 1877 for refurbishment and to be re-barreled for the .45-70 GOVT cartridge. The bore has the distinct Alexander Henry rifling. It features a very neat rear sight that is capable of fine elevation adjustments as well as windage! There are no sling swivels on this state contract model which is correct. Instead, there is a small placard where a rear swivel might go that is marked “CONN/1957” for the Connecticut State Militia and an inventory number. This specimen has a lock marked with “PEABODY PAT./JULY 22 1862/MAN’F’D BY/PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROV. R.I.” The barrel and stock are both marked “H/25”, which is very likely for Company H, gun #25. There seems to be a faint ribbon-style inspection mark on the left side just behind the receiver. Single letter inspection marks may be found throughout. The overall condition is very good. The original blue finish has turned an even brown patina. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is dark with age, showing minor handling marks and remaining solid. The bore features the Alexander Henry rifling and is in great shape, clean and sharp. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic rifle that was almost adopted by the US but was instead used by the Connecticut Militia! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 33 inches. Caliber: .45-70 GOVT Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
