Description:

Antique U.S. SPRINGFIELD M1816 Percussion Musket

Made in the Late 1830s

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1816 Percussion Musket, made circa 1836 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Model 1816 musket was manufactured at both the Harpers Ferry and Springfield Arsenals between 1816 and 1844. This smoothbore .69 caliber musket would have originally been made in the flintlock format. In fact, the Model 1816 was the last U.S. martial firearm made in flintlock. Since it was a proven design with many still in service, some were updated to the percussion firing system. These were some of the most abundant weapons available to both sides, being in the hands of state militias in the first days of the American Civil War.

The barrel tang is dated “1836”. The lock is marked “US/SPRINGFIELD/1839” with a federal eagle. The barrel is marked “V”, “P”, “5” and an eagle head. The butt plate is marked “US”. There are two faint cartouches on the left side of the stock opposite the lock. The lock comes from another Model 1816.

The overall condition is good. The lock is smooth and dark while the barrel is slightly weathered and semi-bright. The markings are clear and legible. The smooth bore is in very good condition. The stock is in good shape. The action on this musket is strong. Here is a great musket with a long history of US service!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 42 inches.

Caliber: .69 Percussion
