Description:
The Remington Sportsman ’48 is that company’s final variation of the John M. Browning’s Auto-5 shotgun, tracing its roots back to the Model 11 (1905-47). After forty-two years of license-building Browning’s gun, Remington took the design and improved on it, making the shotgun both easier to manufacture and easier to use. The receiver was altered to give a smoother appearance, much like the later Sportsman ’58 and Model 1100. Like the Model 11 and Auto-5, the Sportsman ‘48 is a long-recoil design; that is, the barrel travels backwards in the receiver during recoil as its method of operation instead of using a gas piston. The M2 .50-caliber machine gun, another Browning design, uses the same method of operation. By its design, a long-recoil design will have more felt-recoil than a gas-piston design but is more reliable under adverse conditions. According to the shotgun’s barrel date stamp, it was produced in November of 1949, making it a second-year production gun. Strangely, the date stamp was applied near perfectly – the letters are crisp and clear and evenly spaced. On many Remington barrels, the letters are barely visible, with improper spacing between them. On this barrel, even the inspector’s mark is properly stamped. The word Mod is stamped just above but has been crossed out with small, short marks so as not to be visibly intrusive as a single long slash would be. This alteration would have been made when the barrel was changed to use the Cutts Compensator. The Cutts is an early method of giving a shotgun a multi-choke capability, and was a popular modification for shotguns in the 50’s-70’s. The barrel is 22 inches in bore length, and 26 inches going to the end of the choke. It currently sports a “Cutts choke” which is a special way of saying “wide-open choke.” The diameter is greater than that found on a cylinder choke. Having owned a Model 11-48 (predecessor to the '48) in 28-gauge, I can say that the design works very well, is very reliable, and fun to shoot. Cutts chokes work very well and are easy to switch out. This particular ’48 is in good condition. The barrel shows some finish wear mainly due to the long recoil operation via interaction with the forend. The receiver retains its bluing well. The stock and forend are nearly pristine, with but a few small scuff marks to spoil it. The bore is in excellent condition with no pitting. Please see the pictures above. If you are a collector of Remington shotguns, or are looking for an excellent multi-purpose shotgun, the Sportsman ‘48 is one to consider.
