Description:

Antique US SPRINGFIELD ARMORY Model 1816 Musket

Flintlock to Percussion Conversion Dated “1841”

Here we present a U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1816 Percussion Conversion Musket, made in Springfield, Massachusetts circa 1841. The Model 1816 musket was manufactured at both the Harpers Ferry and Springfield Arsenals between 1816 and 1844. This smoothbore .69 caliber musket would have originally been made in the flintlock format. In fact, the Model 1816 was the last U.S. martial firearm made in flintlock. Since it was a proven design with many still in service, some were updated to the percussion firing system. These were some of the most abundant weapons available to both sides, being in the hands of state militias in the first days of the American Civil War.

The lock is marked “US/SPRINGFIELD/1841”. Two faint government inspector cartouches remain on the left side of the stock, opposite the lock.

The overall condition is fair. The metal surfaces have been finished brown at some point. The second barrel band is absent and the front band is still bright. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is worn but solid, showing some handling marks and a sliver on the right side where the second barrel band would have been. The bore is fairly caked with years of dust and residue. The action is functional, but half-cock notch is weak.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 42 inches.

Caliber: .69 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
