GORGEOUS Enfield P-1853 Musket Turned FOWLER
With Unique Engravings & Stag’s Head Inlay
Here we present an antique Enfield Pattern 1853 Rifle-Musket Turned Fowling Piece, originally made circa 1860 in England. This example’s barrel bears the standard Birmingham commercial proof marks like many of those imported by the Confederacy during the American Civil War. It was one of the most numerous muskets on the battlefield during the war. After this one retired from military service, it was very nicely converted to a smoothbore percussion fowler, complete with very unique engravings on all metal parts. The barrel was bored smooth to 20 Gauge, the stock was shortened, and the firearm embellished throughout. Engravings are mostly floral though there is a stag’s head mounted on the side of the stock opposite the lock. There is a small silver initial placard mounted in the bottom of the stock. Fore end is pewter. Here is a truly unique, one of a kind conversion of an Enfield 1853.
The overall condition is near fine. The metal surfaces are smooth with a dark brown patina. The stock is smooth and solid. The smooth bore is in very good shape. The action is excellent.
