Description:
Purdey 12-bore hammerless ejector self-opening game gun, serial #26,220, originally completed in August 1950 for Bosch Van Drakstein with 29in. barrel length (choke 1/2 [right] & full [left]; 2 1/2in. chambers), stock length 15 7/16in. (with Silver's recoil-pad) and 6 lb. 13 1/2oz. original weight. Gun built with "No. 2" gold-engraved on lever and barrels but there is no note as to which gun it was built to match. In November 1974, stock was adjusted by Purdey to 14 7/8in. including recoil pad, and the stock and cast were adjusted accordingly; oval was then engraved "PS". In 2004, barrel chambers were lengthened to 2 3/4in. and reproofed in London prior to import to U.S. Currently, stock is 14in. wood, 1/4in. ebonite with two leather-covered pads to bring final LOP to either 15in. or 15 1/4in. as required for the clothing of the season; straight-hand ("English") grip; splinter fore-end. The hand-oiled stock is 3/8in. cast off, with drops of 1 5/8in. at comb, 1 7/8in. at face and 2 3/8in. at heel. The barrel length and chokes are as original. The left bore diameter is 0.730 (0.039 constriction for full choke) with 0.032 minimum wall thickness. The right bore diameter is 0.732 (0.020 constriction for 1/2 choke) and 0.031 minimum wall thickness. Action engraving is fine rose & scroll with original case-coloring remaining on the action and fore-end iron. The gun is in a period Cogswell & Harrison label-a makers leather case with a replacement Purdey label and associated accouterments; the case has a canvas-cover made in 2004. The gun is in excellent condition.
