Description:
Ithaca NID 28 Gauge Field Grade – SKEET GUN, SST, EJ, BEAVERTAIL, ORIGINAL ithaca nid 28ga sxs

Description:
Ithaca NID 28 Gauge Field Grade Side-by-Side
SKEET GUN, SST, EJ, BEAVERTAIL, ORIGINAL

General Specs: Ithaca, Year 1934, 28 Gauge, 6lbs 1oz, SxS
Serial Number: 459625

The “New Ithaca Double” was the last rendition of side x side produced by the Ithaca Gun Co. Replacing the prolific Flues model in 1926, produced through 1949, the NID (as it became known) was touted as Ithaca’s strongest action ever. Relatively low production of 45,000 guns over the NID period forecasted the end of the golden years of the American side by side. Only 295 Field Grades were produced in 28ga. MOST ALL OF THESE WERE THE PRE-1934 VERSION WITH PLAIN JANE FEATURES. There was a noticeable upgrade in the aesthetics and quality of the NID Field Grade in 1934, including semi fancy walnut with fluted combs, ebony inlay in the forend, nicer checkering, elimination of the cocking indicators, and some line engraving and stippling on the top of the receiver. This gun, sn459625 made in 1934, has these nicer features, and even better, was produced as a VERY RARE SKEET GUN WITH SINGLE SELECTIVE TRIGGER, EJECTORS, BEAVERTAIL FOREND, DOUBLE IVORY BEADS, AND SKEET-IN/SKEET-OUT CHOKES. ALL FACTORY ORIGINAL FINISHES, EVEN THE WOOD. Case color 75%, blue 97%, mirror bores, great stock dimensions, excellent screws, no cracks or repairs. 6lbs. and balanced on the hinge pin…AWESOME! As most collectors of American doubles know, the 28ga is very sought after and markedly more expensive than the larger bored guns, even more desirable than the .410 because of its versatility and lethality in the field. Remember, the 28ga. American double was only produced by Parker and Ithaca. For any serious shooter/collector, the small-bore Classic American Doubles are the pinnacle of desirability. The Ithaca NID is an awesome gun with brilliant mechanics, super-strong receiver, and its affordable! A Parker with these features and factory condition would cost 2.5 times as much as the Ithaca. Ithaca NID small bore guns represent the very best value in today’s shooter/collector market with relatively low cost that will surely increase the most in value during the next 5 years. The mechanics of this little NID 28ga. are perfect inside and out, bores are mirrors, no splits or cracks anywhere, excellent screws, barrels are tight on breech face and hinge pin with lever well right of center. The 26” barrels are choked SK1/SK2 (.006/.014 constrictions) making it the ultimate upland bird gun as well as a fun gun to shoot pee-wee competition at the vintage side x side shoots. What a great piece of American gun art that is just as fun to shoot today as it was 80 years ago. Thanks for looking!
