ENGRAVED Antique Belgian SxS Shotgun by “SCHEPERS”
Very Attractive Double Barrel Shotgun Circa 1860s
Here we present an antique Belgian Side by Side Percussion Shotgun by Francois Schepers, made in Liege, Belgium circa the 1860s. This very attractive hunting shotgun features 30-1/2 inch side by side laminated steel barrels with a still very distinct twist pattern as well as locks, trigger guard, barrel tang, ramrod pipe, and butt plate that are very handsomely engraved with dog and fowl themes and delicate floral scroll. There is an initial placard behind the checkering on the bottom of the butt stock. The wrist of the stock is uniquely diamond shaped. The top of the barrel is marked “LAMINATED STEEL”. The bottom of the barrels are littered with assembly marks and Belgian proof marks. There is also the maker’s mark “F. SCHEPERS A LIEGE”. This was and still remains a very nice gun for fowl.
The overall condition is very good. The barrels retain their distinct fine twist pattern. The other hardware has a light patina. The markings and engravings are clear. The walnut stock is in good condition with a few handling marks. The bores are in very good condition, smooth with no pitting. Both actions are excellent, crisp and strong. Here is a beauty from mid-19th Century Belgium!
