Description:

“J.P. MURRAY COLUMBUS GA” Half-Stock Long Rifle

Southern Gun Maker Turned Confederate Supplier

Here we present an antique J.P. Murray Half-Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa the 1840s in Columbus, Georgia. John P. Murray was a maker of fine guns prior to the American Civil War. When the war began, both the Union and the Confederacy were quite short on serviceable arms for their infantry. While the Union was eventually able to massively ramp up production through the National Armories and numerous contractors, the Confederacy primarily relied on imports with many Southern makers contributing as well. Murray would cease his making of hunting arms to become the master armorer of a manufactory owned by Eldridge S. Greenwood and William C. Gray in 1862. Production was extremely limited and only a few hundred are known to have been delivered, one could surmise due to lack of raw material and skilled workers. His earlier work appears to be equally as rare.

This handsome example of Murray’s rifle features a 32-3/4 inch octagonal barrel with a turned down muzzle for a bullet starter, a very nice touch. The brass trigger guard is very distinctly shaped with the rear portion acting as a pistol grip. This rifle is equipped with a double set trigger for precision shots. Butt plate, trigger guard, ramrod pipe, and fore end cap are of brass. The top barrel flat is marked “JP MURRAY/COLUMBUS GA”. The back action lock is marked “COLUMBUS GA”. The left side of the butt has “GEO W HORNE” inscribed on a silver banner. Muscogee County records show George W. Horne of Columbus, Georgia marrying Catharine W Bartlett on May 10 of 1857.

The overall condition is very good. The original blued finish has turned a solid plum color with age. The lock bears a light patina. The brass hardware also bears a soft patina. The markings are legible. The walnut stock shows honest handling and is in very good condition. The original ramrod has been lost over time. The bore is in good condition, clean with sharp rifling. The action is excellent. The rear set trigger must be engaged to fire the weapon. Here is a rare example of J.P. Murray’s antebellum work!
