Description:
This is the Remington-Maynard percussion tape primer lock conversion done on a U.S. Model 1816 flintlock musket. The new conversion locks and percussion breech pieces were manufactured by Remington and shipped to the New York Arsenal and subsequently shipped to the Frankford, PA Arsenal where the guns were assembled with the new locks and percussion breech pieces and barrels rifled to .69 caliber. The ramrod head was also cupped for use with the new ammunition. This one was modified on contract with the state of New Jersey and has the New Jersey cartouche on the stock flat and letter 'N' on the left barrel flat - the 'J' of the NJ barrel stamp was cut off when the breech block conversion piece was installed. New Jersey received 1,300 of these guns, but only the first 200 were fitted with long range rear sights which this example does not have. Breech tang is dated 1858, lock is marked in 4 lines: 'Remington's Ilion N,Y,, 1858, U.S.'.  The gun is in excellent condition, all iron parts are clean bright steel, markings and mechanics are excellent. Stock also fine dark walnut, never sanded, no damage, sharp edges,  and has its original oil finish. Rifled bore is fine. This is a very fine example of a much used early Civil War issued infantry longarm. Please e-mail me if additiopnal information or photos are required.
