R. Bessel & Sohn 12 Gauge Side-by-Side
SUPERB ENGRAVING, FIT, FINISH; SCULPTED FRAME, BEST GUN, WOW!

General Specs: R. Bessel, Year Pred-1939, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 12oz, SxS
Serial Number: 19513

What an incredible find!  R. Bessel & Sohn was best know for building fine rifles, but before me is an amazing s x s shotgun.  My work puts me in touch with thousands of the finest shotguns in the world and at times it is a bit numbing.  Then something different…SUPERIOR COMPARED TO THE FINEST… and a gun I have not seen in my 25 years of intense chasing.  This fine German made gun, sn19513 made before 1939 based upon the proof marks (appears to be an early 20’s gun to me), shows BEST GUN FEATURES in function, form, and execution.  The engraving is some of the best I have ever seen from any country in the world, from any time period you dare to compare.  The super-fine English floral and scroll is executed to perfection.  The coverage is 100%, including deep relief game scenes on 3 sides of the receiver, delightful vine and foliate deeply cut into the sideplates and breech balls, and delicate borders that are simply the finest, most incredible work I have seen.  The bottom of the action is stepped and sculpted, the breech and muzzle have nicely done wedges of engraving…simply over-the-top!  The finely figured stock is fit to the action without flaw, and that is no easy task as the frame is rebated, the sideplates are ornately shaped like none I have ever seen, and there is not a hair’s width of space between wood and metal anywhere.  The action is typical of the Germans, totally overbuilt for strength and generations of use.  There are actually 6 locking points; 2 underlug bolts, Greener cross bolt, tapered doll’s head rib extension, sideclips, and a barrel lug protruding through the bottom of the frame.  The shaping and filing of the frame is superb, and there are few craftsman alive today that could duplicate this at any cost.  The 30” barrels are made of superior Witten Excelsior steel with perfect bores, no dents or dings, tight ribs, and they are tight as new on the hinge pin and breech face.  The triggers are crisp, the safety works as it should, and cocking indicators will help you know which barrel is still live.  The wood is beautifully figured Circassian walnut with a very vintage, rock hard Silvers style pad at the butt.  We can fit a new pad to the gun at the next owners request.  I suggest a fine leather covered pad.  This is a superbly built, ready to hunt or break clays, masterpiece of a fine German side x side.  Look closely at the photos for the finest fit and finish you would expect of a BEST GUN.  Thanks for looking, and if you have any information on this maker I would appreciate a bit of education.
