Description:
Offered here is a scarce original Sharps Model 1859 percussion Navy Model carbine. It is made without the Cavalry saddle bar and ring and fitted with a rifle type frame and buttstock. In the early months of the Civil War the U.S. Navy purchased a small quantity of Model 1859 Sharps carbines in this configuration. They are known serial numbered between 40,000 and 44,000. This one is SN 43,xxx matching on both the receiver and underside of barrel. Very few of these guns were produced and it is known that post-war at least 190 of these original percussion carbines were converted to .50-70 centerfire and included in the stores of the Fort Union Arsenal. Therefore, surviving original percussion examples are quite scarce. The gun has all original parts matching in condition. All correct Sharps markings are present and entirely legible. All of the pellet primer parts are present in the lock and the mechanism works perfectly. The breech block and face plate are fine as is the nipple and all screws. Original sights are present. Original stocks are fine showing raised grain in the buttstock, no chips, cracks or damage to the stocks. There is no stock cartouche which would be correct for this early Navy purchase. All of the metal is  aged gunmetal color with blotchy patches of brown age and tarnish present. The barrel is more smooth cleaned steel color..There are scattered patches of light pitting, but nothing significant. The rifling in the bore is still strong but there are patches of pitting and some roughness, it might clean better. This is a very scarce original Sharps carbine in original complete condition. E-mail me if additional information or photos are needed.
