Description:
This is a very cool non-import marked Kar.98 Mauser that was most certainly a WW2 trophy bring-back rifle and has had a very interesting military service history.  This Kar.98 started life in 1916 manufactured by the Erfurt firm and used in the World War 1.  After the war ended and the German's were permitted to maintain a small army and police force, this rifle was kept and rebuilt in 1920 for Weimar Republic service.  Most of the Weimar rebuilds we have encountered are mismatched or force matched but this rifle was likely kept all original and matching with only the receiver stamped with the date of rebuild, 1920.  One can only surmise that it remained in service thru the inter-war years and kept in inventory until the Nazis came into power and World War 2 began.  These Weimar rebuilds and particularly the KAR.98s were often issued to second line combat troops and guards in WW2, and in addition were used quite frequently by SS troops.  While this Kar.98 is not marked with any WW2 Nazi or SS markings, it has a WW2 era K98 bolt in it.  The common practice of U.S. GI's was to remove the bolts of surrendered or captured rifles and put the bolts in one pile and rifles in another to make them incapable of being fired quickly.  This is likely how this rifle ended up with a K98 bolt in it in an otherwise all-matching rifle.  This rifle has very little of the original factory blue finish on it but rather has a blue/brown patina.  As mentioned before, all of the numbered parts including the stock and even the triggerguard screws are matching to the receiver except for the bolt.  The stock is in similar condition to the metal parts, showing battle use and handling marks, but is free from cracks or repairs.  The stock is factory numbered on the keel of the butt to the receiver but also has a number on the side of the butt that does not correspond to any other numbers, likely a rack or weapon number for a Weimar police district.  The bore is dark but shows lots of rifling left and there are no bulges or major pits.  Everything works on this Kar.98 100% as it was designed to.  The action is smooth and the bolt locks up into battery tight with no play.  If you have been looking for a neat and historical Kar.98 to add to your collection this would be a great choice.  It is very interesting to think of all the battle and action that this rifle likely took part in.
