Description:
Vintage Firearms - FOX SHOTGUNS

Fox CE 12 Gauge Shotgun
80% FACTORY CASE COLOR

General Specs: Fox, Year 1916, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 5oz, SxS
Serial Number: 22731

The C Grade Fox is considered by most to be one of the most handsome of the A.H. Fox Graded guns, with its finely cut English scroll, game scene engraving, and nicely engraved trigger guard.  The C Grade shipped with European walnut figured well on both sides of the stock and was the first level of decoration that is considered a high-grade Fox.  This Philly Fox CE, sn22731 from 1916, is a gorgeous example of the grade., All metal finishes are factory original, with 80%  case color, 99% barrel blue, 95%  charcoal blue on the trigger guard, excellent screws and wood-to-metal fit…just a great Fox.  It still has  factory “strike marks” on the barrels.  The buttstock on this Fox is the original stock with very nicely figured French walnut, no cracks or repairs, and retains the same full length of pull as the day it left the factory (we actually shortened the pad by ¼” so it looks more graceful.  The LOP would be 14” with the original factory pad on the gun…the wood has not been cut.  The original pad was hard as a rock).  This is the kind of wood that bends very easily, so if you want different stock dimensions that can be easily achieved within 10 days of purchase.  It is clear the famous gunsmith Paul Jaeger built the beavertail forend, as it is signed with his name on the underside.  It is likely that he also altered this pistol grip gun to its present straight grip style at the same time.  (If we had done it, we would have made a long tang trigger guard to exact Fox standards and made the checkering match the original Fox straight grip design.  We can do that for the new owner within 6 weeks of purchase for an extra charge.  It looks great just the way she is).  The 30” #3 weight Krupp Steel barrels are unaltered since leaving the factory, have mirror bores and lots of wall thickness.  The factory F/F chokes are perfect for your late season upland birds, waterfowl, or your spring turkey hunts.  Utilize the RST spreader loads and you end up shooting modified or M/F choke patterns for real versatility in the field or on the sporting clays range.  The barrels are tight on the breech face and hinge pin like a new gun with the lever well right of center.   THE ENGRAVING ON THIS GUN IS EXEMPLARY OF THE FINEST ERA OF FOX ENGRAVERS, MUCH MORE DETAILED THAN MOST YOU WILL SEE.  It is almost certain that the engraving on this gun was executed by none other than the famed Joseph Loy, as the line engraving to the left and right of the circle vignette on the bottom of the frame represents what many believe are Joseph Loy’s stylized initials.  What a fine example of a well-cared-for Philly Fox with no issues and ready to go afield or to the gun club.  The present configuration, ie. SST, EJ, BVTL, and English style grip is desirable and impossible to find in an unaltered Fox.  This gun weighs 7lbs. 5oz. and balances perfectly 3/16” ahead of the hinge pin.  She is a finely tuned shooting machine likely built for live pigeon shoots in Pennsylvania.  The Fox guns have steadily gone up in price and are not yet on par with the Parker guns, so they will continue to go up in value as you enjoy their use…a great investment opportunity and a better gun than modern guns of today.  Thanks for looking!
