Description:
Serial #10743, .28-30, 29" part octagon barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a fine looking rifle, built on a 44 1/2 action, that has retained 90-92% of the original blue finish on the barrel with the balance aged to a mellow plum-brown, and some silvering at the muzzle and edges of the barrel facets. Crisp Stevens markings are present at the breech, and a small and unobtrusive import mark is present on the underside just ahead of the forend tip. Two scope blocks have been fitted, but a target globe front sight, and Vernier tang sight are also installed. The frame has delicate floral scrollwork engraving and retains 97-98% of the original color case-hardening. The full-loop underlever retains a similar amount of color case-hardening. The mechanics are tight and functional, and the double-set triggers have a crisp let-off. The checkered walnut forend with schnabel tip is in fine shape with only a few minor handling marks in the lovely original oil finish, and the schutzen style buttstock has a checkered, pistol-grip, rounded cheek-piece, and case-hardened hooked butt. The buttstock is a well-made modern replacement, and the hooked buttplate needs some further fitting as there is a small, but noticeable gap between the wood and metal at the heel. Included with the rifle is a 1999 dated certificate from The Worshipful Company of Gunmakers that declares that the rifle was presented to them for examination, but not proof-fired due to its antique status. This is a splendid Stevens “schutzen Junior" and would make a wonderful addition to any collection. FFL or C&R
