Payment Types Accepted: Visa,Master Card, Discover,Check Description: This is a beautiful Weimar period rework of a WW1 Gew 98 Mauser made by Spandau in 1917. These rework variations are quite interesting and have a significant amount of history in each of them. Most of the WW1 era Gew 98s still in the hands of the Germans after WW1 ended were used extensively in the inter-war years and many again saw service under Nazi rule during WW2 in various capacities. This particular Mauser started life in 1917 as a Gew 98 manufactured by Spandau in a standard configuration as an infantry rifle. It was retained after the Treaty of Versailles and used by the German Weimar Republic for some time until being sent to the Zeithahn Depot for re-working 1927. These re-works vary to a large degree with any number of changes or parts being replaced depending on condition and availability. In some cases whole rifles were created from servicable receivers and parts stripped from otherwise unusable rifles. This particular rifle has numerous parts from other rifles on it, suggesting that everything was scrapped except for the bolt and receiver which are both numbered 140. The barrel was updated to an "S" bore barrel with the new flat rear sight instead of the Lange "roller coaster" model, while all the other Gew 98 parts appear to be original finish pieces in good condition that were stripped from other WW1 vintage Gew 98s.. All of the parts including the receiver and bolt that needed to be blued were finished and the rifle was assembled. As you can see from the pictures this rifle is very handsome and has a great look to it. It still has some fire blued parts and the bayonet lug left "in the white" that give it some attractive contrast. Everything works 100% on this Spandau and the action is smooth and locks up tight. The bore still shows nice rifling but appears dark from light pitting throughout. It comes with a nice original period leather sling. These re-work variations are a collecting field in their own right, but if you would like to have one nice example in your military collection this would be an excellent choice. It is not often we get these re-works that are this attractive and well-marked.
