The Smith & Wesson New Model No.3 Target Model was made from 1887 to 1910, with 4,333 manufactured. The 6-shot, top break, single action revolvers were fitted with a 6 1/2 inch barrel (with other lengths believed to have been available), checkered black hard rubber or checkered walnut grips, adjustable rear sight, front sight consisted of a square blade topped with a bead, blue or nickel finished, and were chambered in either .32-44 S&W or .38-44 S&W. This gun is as described, is fitted with a 6 1/2 inch barrel, checkered hard rubber grips, is blue finished, and chambered in .38-44 S&W. The gun is in excellent original coindition, retaining 85-90% of its original blue finish, with most loss due to flaking. The grips have turned a pleasing light brown in color, fit perfectly, and have mninimal handling marks/wear. The hammer and trigger guard retain 80% of their original color case-hardened finish with even thinning. The bore is bright, with sharp rifling, and the action functions perfectly, with a tight lock-up. It is all numberes matching (frame to cylinder, barrel, top-break latch, and grips).
