In the case of the former, the SP101 holds two fewer rounds than newer examples, but is lighter and easier to carry. In the case of the 63, the SP101 has a barrel that is third longer at the cost of being a mere 6 oz. heavier. Both S&W and Ruger produced their respective .22 revolvers as six shooters early on, before reconfiguring them to 8/10-shot revolvers. Ruger revolvers are well known for their strength and durability. I own a few Ruger revolvers and can attest to their quality. The SP101 is one of the better revolvers on the market today. It must be remembered that S&W revolvers are based on a design that is over 100 years old, while Ruger’s revolvers represent a 1970s design. Not only was the Ruger design newer, it was intended to be superior to the older S&W one. The SP101 in .22 LR uses a 4.2-inch long barrel fitted with a green fiber-optic front sight for easier sight acquisition in low-light conditions. The rear sight is adjustable for both windage and elevation. The SP101, like its older brother, the GP100, uses a triple lock design for greater strength. This is not necessary for a .22 LR chambered revolver but is a nice feature to have regardless. For those who don’t like the engraved wood in rubber grips, there a many aftermarket grips available, some that even provide more grip length for those with large hands. My father used a Model 63 for hunting squirrels back in the day, and the SP101 would be just as well suited to that task as the S&W. The SP101 is also useful for those practicing to use the SP101 with 4.2” barrel chambered in the 357 Magnum and the 327 Federal Magnum (models 5771 and 5773 respectively). This is akin to shooters practicing with the S&W K-22/M17/M18 in 22 before using the K-38/M14/M15 38 Special revolvers. The revolver shown above is pre-owned but appears to have been used very little. There is little to no powder left in the barrel. The chambers are quite clean as well. The finish exhibits very minor wear. SOLD Manufacturer: Sturm, Ruger, & Co., Inc.
