Winchester Model 1895 with deluxe checkered wood and hard rubber shotgun butt in .30 U.S. Model 1903 (30-03). The 30-03 was only in existence from 1903-1906 before it was replaced with 30-06. The serial number of this rifle is 51444, mfg. 1905. Winchester chambered some 1895's in this caliber from 1905-1908. This should be a very rare Winchester due to caliber, deluxe checkered stock and hard rubber butt plate. Includes factory Cody letter confirming configuration.
Over 425,00 Model 1895's were produced. In George Madis Winchester book, he states only 472 had special wood, 386 had checkered or carved stocks and 471 had special butt plates. Add the rare caliber on top of these options and this Winchester is very special.
I'll let the pictures determine condition but will explain the best I can. The receiver retains about 85-90 percent of it's original blue finish with a few light spots of freckling. The barrel retains 95-98 percent of it's original blue finish with a small rub spot on the front left side (see picture) and small amount of freckling. Excellent bore. The stocks are nice with a few marks and rubs and maintains most of the original finish. There is a crack on the right front forearm approximately 3" long. It's stable and not loose. This is a rare, attractive rifle in overall fine condition.
