Description:
This is a beautiful example of a 1941 Lithgow Short Magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE) III*.  Built during WW2 in 1941 as a main battle rifle for the Australian troops, this rifle was built early enough to see 3 to 4 years of combat.  It is a very nice rifle with a great look to it that is all matching except for the bolt.  The nosecap, receiver, and stock all have matching serial numbers, "26266".  The rifle must have been built at the very end of 1941 as the stock has a 1942 acceptance date on it, as well as the stock manufacturer's marking of "SLAZ 42" for Slazenger Annexe (who supplied stocks for Lithgow from 1941 onward) stamped on the bottom of wrist.  The original factory finish is still intact on this SMLE but shows a nice patina and some very small areas of high edge wear that you would expect on an issued but not abused military rifle.  The bore in this Lithgow is pretty good, the rifling is still very prominent with sharp lands and grooves but shows just a little bit of scattered frost (very light pitting).  It should be excellent at the range if the new owner chooses to shoot it.  As mentioned previously, the stock set which is original is also in great condition.  It is free from cracks or repairs, all of the factory/military inspectors stamps are clear and legible, and all of the hardware is intact and tight to the wood.  The brass buttplate shows some small dings but overall is in good shape and has a nice tight trap door for cleaning kit storage.  This rifle does have an import mark on the right side base of the stripper clip bridge, but it is very hard to see as it was a partial light strike.  We had to really look hard to find it and it does not detract from the original overall look of this Lithgow.  Everything works on this SMLE 100% like the day it left the factory.  The bolt works smoothly and locks into battery perfectly.  The adjustable rear sight is in perfect working order, and the safety and trigger function flawlessly.  This Lithgow SMLE III* would be a great addition to any military rifle collection or WW2 weapons collection.  Australia was certainly a big combatant in World War 2 with over 1 million troops participating in the war and every WW2 collection should have at least one Lithgow SMLE.
