Description:

CIVIL WAR Antique COLT Model 1851 NAVY Revolver

Made During the Civil War in 1863

Here we present an antique Colt 1851 Navy Revolver, made in 1863 in Hartford, Connecticut. The 1851 Navy was one of Colt’s most famous and successful lines, reaching a production total of 257,348 from 1850 to 1873 (right up to the time of SAA production) from both Hartford and London factories. From Hartford alone, 185,000 were made by the end of the American Civil War. Many of these saw service during the conflict on both sides. There were some military purchases and lots of private purchases by soldiers going off to war. In addition, the Model 1851 was a favorite of “Wild Bill” Hickok, who carried two of these most famously in his red sash.

There are several markings on this revolver. The makers mark is on the top of the barrel; “ADDRESS COL. SAM COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA”.  The right side of the barrel is marked with “CSA”. This marking was most likely added in the late 19th or early 20th centuries as even then it was desirable to have a “Confederate” gun and one famous seller of surplus firearms is known to have done this. The left side of the frame is marked with both “COLTS PATENT” and “36CAL”. The right side of the walnut grip and the bottom of the grip frame is marked with “57”. A series of small “X” can be found throughout the revolver on the frame, grip frame, trigger guard, and loading lever. All serial numbers match, including the wedge.

The overall condition is very good. The blue finish has turned a deep plum color with age. The markings are legible. The cylinder scene is quite faint due to wear. The serial numbers match, including the wedge. The original walnut grip shows appropriate wear with an old chip out of the left side. The bore is dark with sharp rifling and no pitting. The action is excellent. Here is a very nice example of a Civil War Colt 1851 Navy with lots of character!
