Description:

CIVIL WAR SAVAGE Revolving Fire Arms 1861 MUSKET

1863 Dated RIFLE/MUSKET

Here we present an antique Savage Revolving Fire Arms Contract Model 1861 Rifle Musket, made in 1863 in Middletown, Connecticut. The Model 1861 rifle-musket was the “everyman’s” rifle being the most common U.S. infantry weapon of the Civil War.

As in most U.S. wars, the Federal army was ill prepared for war in 1861. Many of its arms were in southern hands, and the two armories, Springfield, Massachusetts and Harpers Ferry, Virginia, could not make the standard rifle-musket fast enough to supply the huge army required. Early in the War, Harpers Ferry was captured by Virginia troops and the machinery was sent south, so it was lost to the U.S. forever as an arms factory. The result was that the Union turned to contractors. Most did their best to manufacture a good weapon, but for some, their best wasn’t good enough. Others took a lot of money but never produced any guns. Still others produced quality weapons at reasonable prices with Savage being one of them. Savage made 25,520 of them at $18 each. This is a great example of an original Civil War Model 1861 Savage Contract Rifle-Musket!

The lock is marked “EAGLE/U.S./SAVAGE R.F.A.CO./MIDDLETOWN, CT.” The top of the barrel is marked “VP” with an eagle’s head, and the left side of the barrel is marked “N.J.”. This last is the mark that rifles of the New Jersey state militia bore. This example was shortened by 8 inches, with a 3-inch section turned down to .778 inches from .825 inches, possibly for use with a non-regulation bayonet.

The overall condition is good. The iron surfaces are dark gray with age. The markings are clear. The walnut stock shows use with a graft around the barrel tang and a bit of cleaving behind the hammer that is stable. The bore is clean and sharp. The action is strong and crisp.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 32 inches.

Caliber: .58 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
