Description:

BRITISH Antique India Pattern BROWN BESS Musket

Napoleonic Wars Musket by KETLAND & ALLPORT

Here we present an antique Brown Bess Flintlock Musket by Ketland & Allport, made in Birmingham, England circa 1795. This pattern of Brown Bess is the same that fought Napoleon Bonaparte in numerous iconic battles, as well as the United States and their American Indian Allies during the War of 1812. This pattern may also correctly be called the “India Pattern” since the Honorable East India Company was the entity responsible for this update to the gun that had been around since 1722. When war with France loomed on the horizon, the British Board of Ordnance diverted these muskets from the EIC contract to supply the war effort.

The lock is marked with the royal cypher, a crown over “G.R.”, standing for Georgius Rex or King George with a much smaller crown and broad arrow. The tail of the lock is marked “TOWER”. The cock is of the more elegant “swan neck” variety. Two proof marks are stamped into the left side of the barrel, a “Crown/GR” and Birmingham’s crossed scepters. The stock is marked “K&A” on the underside, for Ketland & Allport. “Crown/61” is marked twice behind the trigger guard. “JW” and “U” are found under the side plate opposite the lock. Just to the rear of the side plate are small letters “WIR”. Roman numeral “III” assembly number is found throughout: inside the ramrod channel, interior and exterior of the lock, etc. The spike bayonet is marked “G/23” and “K&A” once again.

Overall condition is very good. The iron parts are dark with an aged patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock is in good shape with two minor repairs around the lock. It is otherwise smooth and solid with a light coat of varnish. The bore is clean and smooth. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a great example of a highly desirable flintlock musket from the Napoleonic Wars!
