Antique SPRINGFIELD Model 1816 FLINTLOCK Musket
Dated to the 1830s
Here we present an antique Springfield Model 1816 Flintlock Musket, made at the Springfield Armory circa 1830s. The Model 1816 was the largest production of U.S. flintlock muskets, with an impressive run from 1816-1840. Both national armories, Springfield and Harpers Ferry, were involved as were about 16 different contractors. Conflicts during this period included numerous encounters with Native Americans, as well as the Mexican-American War.
This one’s lock is marked “SPRING/FIELD/1833” at the tail. This musket has seen some weathering in its service life. Proof markings are visible on the left top of the barrel. This musket began life as a flintlock, was converted to percussion, then converted back to flintlock.
The overall condition is good. The iron surfaces display weathering throughout. The markings are mostly legible. The walnut stock has been lightly sanded and remains smooth and solid. The bore is dark and in good condition. The action is excellent.
