Description:

VERY RARE Antique Hopkins & Allen XL NAVY Revolver

From the Makers of Merwin Hulbert a .38-100 Rimfire Revolver

Here we present an antique Hopkins & Allen Navy Model Single Action Revolver in .38-100 Rimfire, made circa 1880 in Norwich, Connecticut. Only a few hundred are thought to have been made. Hopkins & Allen are known for their generally small and inexpensive pocket-sized revolver produced for the ordinary citizen in the last half of the 19th and first half of the 20th Centuries. However, they are increasingly recognized as the makers of Merwin & Hulbert’s finely designed and manufactured revolvers. Regarding Hopkins & Allen’s line of Army, Navy and Police Revolvers like this one, Flayderman had this to say: “Collectors consider the XL Army and Navy as the finest quality handguns made under the Hopkins & Allen name. They were their only revolvers that could be rated as serviceable for military use”. While there is no documentation that these were ever used in a martial setting, it is not surprising that the company would develop such weapons in the hopes of obtaining a government contract.

This revolver features a single action loading port and a unique pivoting ejector rod. The top strap is marked “XL NAVY/38-100 CAL” and the barrel is marked “HOPKINS & ALLEN M’F’G Co PAT. MAR. 28 71 APR. 27 75”. The inside of the grips are hand-marked in pencil what appears to read “E TRipp/1897” and “AMD/1812”. It would be fascinating to know the significance of such markings as well as the story of this revolver.

The overall condition is very good plus. The metal surfaces bear a nice, even patina. The hammer still shows some case coloring. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The bore is clean and sharp. The original walnut stocks are in good condition and are numbered to the gun. The action on this revolver is excellent. Here is a very neat, rare Hopkins & Allen revolver with some mysterious markings.
