Description:
The Auto 5 was the first commercially successful semi-automatic shotgun, designed by the famous John M. Browning in 1898. Originally, he took the design to Winchester, whom he had previously sold his designs to. When they refused his terms, he took the design to Remington, but the then president of Remington passed away, forcing Browning to take the gun to FN in Belgium. Eventually, the Auto 5 was built under license by Remington as the Model 11. Browning considered the Auto 5 his best design, and it was produced continuously for nearly one hundred years. The Auto-5 shown here has been altered from factory condition. Most notable is the Cutts Compensator. This was a popular modification on shotguns in the 50s, 60s, and early 70s. It was essentially an early of removable chokes. Common sizes included full, modified, and cylinder which was referred to in literature as a “spreader” choke. In addition, for the 12 gauge there was also a Long-Range No.2 and No.3 chokes. An excellent PDF on the Cutts Compensator and its chokes can be found at ://lymanproducts/media/user/file/c/u/cutts_compensator.pdf. In addition to the Compensator, a rubber butt pad has been added, which is the most common modification found on Auto-5s. Overall, the shotgun is in fair condition. Mechanically it is in excellent shape and the bore is very bright with no rust and pitting. The finish on the other hand is simply worn, which is common among older Auto-5s. The receiver has some bluing loss. The barrel exhibits both bluing loss and some minor scratches. The barrel, before the Cutts was originally added, had a modified choke according to the Browning double-asterisk mark on the barrel. Ironically, it currently sports a Cutts Modified choke. This Auto-5 would make a nice shotgun for someone interested in restoring one.
