ERIKSEN Breech Loading UNDERHAMMER Rifle c.1860 RARE Mid-1800’s NORWEGIAN Military Weapon Here we present a remarkable L. Eriksen Breech Loading Underhammer Rifle, designed and manufactured in the mid-19th Century in Norway. This was a completely newly designed rifle, which was unusual since at the time many countries were cutting costs by adapting older pattern guns to percussion. The system featured two things that are seldom seen on military rifles at the time. Firstly, it was a breech loader, and secondly it used an underhammer percussion lock. Breech loading military guns up to this point only made brief appearances, the most famous being the British Ferguson rifle and the American Hall rifle. The advantage of the underhammer mechanism was that the lock has very few parts (notice the curved leaf spring that also served to protect the hammer), the sight picture is wide open due to the totally flat top (no hammer in the way), and the ignition happens along the centerline of the barrel and there is no flash near the eyes to disturb the aim of the shooter. The breech operates by swinging the locking lever up to tip up the breech block for easy loading. This is a really neat rifle that is also very scarce. The top of the breech block is marked “L.ERIKSEN”. The .46 caliber barrel is full-length octagonal with a crowned muzzle. The rear sight is of the military style with an elevation adjustable leaf. The trigger guard is made of brass and forms a pistol grip on the wrist. The other components are of iron. The metal parts are dark with age. The markings are clear. The wooden stock is also dark and quite worn. The crack in the wrist happened long ago as is evidenced by the smoothed edges and the iron strap used to mend it, which matches the patina on the rest of the rifle. The bore is untouched and very dusty and still has visible rifling underneath. The action is functional, though the trigger must be pushed forward to engage the hammer. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 33-1/4 inches. Caliber: .46 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
