This is a very near mint condition Civil War era Ames Bowie Knife Bayonet with brass mounted leather sacabbard designed for the Model 1861 Whitney contract .69 caliber Navy Rifle, aka the Whitney-Plymouth "Dahlgren" Navy Rifle. This example is as close to mint factory new condition as you will find - a 9 on a scale of 1 to 10. The bright blade is unsharpened and retains all of its birght luster polish with mint markings of AMES MFg Co over CHICOPEE over MASS on one side of the ricasso and U,S.N. over D.R. over 1864 on the other side.Tip of blade is perfect, no damage, no nicks in edge of blade, no pitting and just a few tiny blemishes of tarnish at the ricasso. Brass grip is fine with a perfect DR oval cartouche on the end face of the grip. Walnut wood portion of the grip with finger ridges also very fine with no damage. The locking mechanism and spring are also fine mechanically. Very fine black leather scabbard with perfect seam stitching and great luster, near perfect condition. Brass mounts have original pins and beautiful untouched bronze color aged patina. It would be very difficult to find another example in better condition. This one fits a fine 1863 dated Whitney Plymouth Rifle in my collection perfectly. When displayed mounted on the rifle this makes for one awesome looking weapon.
