Description:
This is a certified Whitney Confederate used Mississippi rifle dated 1850. It shows used but no abuse. It is still 54 caliber and retains the rear sight. This weapon was captured from the CS 24th TN Infantry during the Battle for Nashville on Dec 16, 1864. It was then presented by the members of the 17th TN US Colored Troops to their commanding officer Col. William R. Shafter. This is inscribed on the brass patch box. Col. Shafter received the Medal of Honor as First Lt Company I, 7th Michigan Infantry at Fair Oaks, VA on the 31st of May 1862. The metal was issued 12, June 1895. Lt. Shafter was engaged in bridge construction and not needed there so returned with his men to engage the enemy. During a charge across an open field 18 of his 22 men were killed or wounded including Shafter. He remained on the field and concealed his wound for 3 days, so he could remain in command. After the war, Shafter was assigned to frontier duty and was known as Pecos Bill Shafer while he was in command of the Buffalo Soldiers in West TX. During the Spanish American War, he was promoted to Major General of Volunteers and was the Commanding General in Cuba.
