Look for the gold '55 Chevy road sign! ~Trades and offers are always considered~ Very Rare John Krider, Philadelphia, Civil War State of Pennsylvania Contract Militia Musket, Short Rifle/Musketoon Pattern, .58 Cal, mfg. 1861. At the outbreak of the Civil War in 1861 the state of Pennsylvania contracted a small number of militia muskets, likely for Philadelphia, to be made by noted gun maker John Krider. Krider is regarded as one of the premier American rifle and shotgun makers of the era and was very well known for the outstanding quality of his guns. The contract muskets were produced in three variants: a two-band short rifle or "musketoon" with 33" barrel, two-band rifle with 36" barrel, and a three-band musket with 39" barrel. In total only about 200 of these guns were manufactured making them one of the rarest military contracts of the war. This example features the 33" rifled barrel and remains in wonderfully untouched original condition. The lock is stamped "KRIDER" while the top of the breech is very faintly marked "PHILADA". Original post front sight and fixed single leaf rear. Overall the metal has an even plum/brown patina. The stock is in very fine condition retaining it's original finish with much of the grain still raised. Aside from a 2 1/8" crack under the lock and some minor chipping along the ramrod channel the wood is very nice with no further damage or repairs and very minimal marring. Brass buttplate, patchbox, hammer screw, triggegruard, lock screw escutcheons, and barrel bands all show a pleasing mellowed color. The inside of the patchbox door is stamped "KRIDER" with inspection mark "E". Original sling swivels and pewter forend cap. The ramrod is missing. The action is remarkably strong and crisp. Clean original nipple. The bore appears to have very sharp and strong rifling front to back. It is dirty from years of sitting but I think a proper cleaning will yield an impressively fine bore. This is fantastic original example of an extremely rare contract musket that eludes even the most advanced Civil War collections.
