Spies Lock. Joseph and Robert Bartlett hailed from Binghamton, New York and were the sons of Captain Isaac Bartlett, who was born in 1794. In 1829, Isaac moved to Chenango Point, New York. It was then that his sons Joseph and Robert started their gun making business making flintlock Kentucky style rifles at first, and then percussion arms later. In 1834 their shop on Court Street was procured by the state for a canal project, forcing the brothers to move locations to Franklin Street, which is now Washington Street. Also in 1834, the city changed its name to Binghamton. Because of this, all Bartlett arms after 1834 were marked as “Binghamton”, rather than “Chenango Point”. That makes this gun built somewhere in the five year span between 1829 and 1834. The Bartlett plant folded in 1850, being unable to compete with the less expensive machine made guns being put out on an assembly line production basis. A.W. Spies was a very prominent general gunsmith and dealer on Broadway in New York City from 1832 to 1860. This musket features a half-octagonal, half-round barrel with both a front and rear sight. The top of the barrel is marked “R. BARTLETT/CHENANGO, PA”. The lock is marked “A.W. SPIES”. The overall condition is fair. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are legible. The stock shows lots of use and is cracked on the underside of the forearm. The bore is smooth and dark. The action on this rifle is not functional and the hammer freely moves under spring tension. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 33 inches. Caliber: .54 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
